The American Civil Liberties Union filed suit Wednesday allegingCook County Hospital violated Dr. Renslow Sherer's right to freespeech when it demoted him for speaking to the press withoutauthorization.
The lawsuit seeks Sherer's reinstatement as acting director ofthe hospital's AIDS service, a job he was removed from July 23, and$200,000 in compensatory and punitive damages.
It also seeks an end to the hospital's policy that requires its4,000 employees to get administrative clearance before speaking tothe press.
