WASHINGTON Rep. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) complained Thursdaythat the Federal Aviation Administration is permitting hundreds ofpilots to continue flying even while they face possible criminalprosecution for lying on their license applications about drug andalcohol convictions.
He cited the oil spill disaster in Alaska, where the captain ofthe oil tanker that spilled millions of gallons of crude into the seawas licensed despite prior drunken-driving convictions. He was foundto be legally drunk and not in command of his vessel at the time ofthe spill.
